Abstract

Baldo Loy worked for the Pacific Steamship Association as a Stevedore in 1923 and for the Moore Drydock Company in 1924. By 1935, he was a member of the Industrial Union of Marine and Shipbuilding Workers of America, Local 9. He was "granted Honorable, withdrawel [sic] from this Local" on 26 January 1936. That same year, at the age of 36, he was issued a picket card by the Maritime Federation of the Pacific coast, serving the organization faithfully during the Maritime Federation Pacific Coast strike. The collection consists of picket cards and other forms of identification relating to Baldo Loy's union affiliations.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

The Baldo Loy International Longshoremen's and Warehouse Union (ILWU) Ephemera Collection documents Baldo Loy's various union affiliations from 1924 to 1977 when he worked as a stevedore in San Pedro. The collection consists predominantly of cards issued by various longshoreman and maritime unions including the International Longshoremen's and Warehousemen's Union (ILWU), the Committee for Maritime Unity (CMU), the Industrial Union of Marine and Shipbuilding Workers of America (IUMSW), the Maritime Federation of the Pacific Coast, and the International Longshoremen's Association (ILA). Items include picket cards, working cards, identification cards, attendance records, membership books, a traveling card, a registration badge, and a document confirming Loy's honorable withdrawal from the IUMSW. These items serve to document proof of employment, various transfers, attendance at union meetings, attendance at picketing events, and distribution of meal tickets as well as the payment of fines, strike funds, burial funds, and monthly union dues. Some of the membership books also include parts or entire reproductions of their union constitutions. Files are arranged alphabetically by title.
