Historical Note: Francis Gilbert Webb (1853-1941) was a well-known English music critic and musicologist writing from the turn of the 19th century until 1932 as 'Lancelot" of The Referee. He wrote for several dailies: The Yorkshire Post, The Standard, Morning Post, Daily Telegraph, The Observer, and The Sunday Times. He was one of the founders of the Musical News and the Folk Song Society, and co-authored two books on music, Indian Music (1914) and Oostersche muziek (1921).
