The foundation for the California Association for the Education of Young Children began with a small group of nursery school professionals at Mills College of Oakland, in 1926. By January 1953, a state association proposal was written. The first annual meeting of the board of directors was held in 1955. The CAEYC has become a vital force uniting educators of young children. The CAEYC seeks to improve the professional status of early childhood educators and care givers, to strengthen association leadership, to expand political power and advocacy for children, and to provide support and services for its members. The records of the CAEYC document the establishment and development of the Association through correspondence, brochures, minutes, reports, and related printed materials. The collection consists primarily of CAEYC conference files.
