Bruland, Richard (1946-) | Special Collections & Archives

Name: Bruland, Richard (1946-)

Historical Note:

Richard Bruland was born in Lima, Peru in 1946, to Raymond and Mary Bruland. The family moved several times before settling in Geneva, Switzerland, where Bruland attended high school and discovered his passion for art. Bruland furthered his education at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and studied painting at the California Institute of the Arts.

In 1982, Bruland opened Bebop Records and Fine Art with René Engel. They managed the store together until Engel left the business in 1985. Bruland continued to manage the store until it closed in August 1990, during which time the store's focus shifted to become a performance and gallery venue. The store became known as an alternative performance place for local musicians, poets, and visual artists. Bruland created original poster artwork to announce each evening's show. Posters were displayed in Bebop Record's front window.
