Violet Atkins Klein Papers
Scope and Contents
The Violet Atkins Klein Papers document Klein's creative process in writing novels, short fiction, and scripts. The material in this collection documents the writing process, including research materials and drafts. It includes finished scripts, un-produced manuscripts, legal documents, correspondence, and research materials. Various drafts of a given work are often included, illustrating the author's writing process. The collection is divided into seven series: Stories, Film Ideas, Scripts (1938-1967), Television Works (1961-1963), Legal Documents and Contracts (1944-1947), Treasury Start Parade Scripts (1942), Camel Caravan, Camel Hour, and Lost Mail Bag (1935-1961).
Series I, Stories, Film Ideas, Scripts, contains various complete and fragmented manuscripts for works of fiction and scripts arranged alphabetically by title. Also included are Klein's notes on ideas and editing for these manuscripts. Some folders contain newspaper and magazine clippings used as research material in preparing the stories. The portfolio material for Samuel Klein contains assorted papers and clippings for works written under that name.
Series II, Television Works, includes scripts written expressly for, or adapted to television. The scripts are arranged alphabetically by title, and often include several versions of one story.
Series III, Legal Documents and Contracts, consists of various records and correspondence pertaining to the legal aspects of Ms. Klein's career. Included are copies of contracts and receipts of scripts registered with the Screen Writers Guild. There is also a series of correspondence between Ms. Klein and her agent documenting some of the difficulties she experienced in her attempts to sell her work to the studios. These folders in this series are arranged alphabetically by title.
Series IV, Treasury Star Parade Scripts, includes scripts that were aired as part of the Treasury Star Parade radio program. The scripts are arranged alphabetically by episode title. In some instances there are original and revised versions of the script as well as the shooting script. The scripts are marked with the broadcast date and include the cast credits for the episode. Some of the scripts in this section are signed by one or more of the actors and include handwritten notes in the margins.
Series V, Camel Caravan, consists of scripts for the radio program Camel Caravan. It is organized alphabetically by episode title, and the scripts also include the broadcast date of the performance.
Series VI, Camel Hour, includes scripts from another radio program, the Camel Hour. These scripts are arranged alphabetically by episode title, and include the broadcast date of the show. There are various drafts of some of the titles as well as the shooting scripts.
Series VII, Lost Mail Bag, is comprised of material related to a proposed television series that Atkins tentatively titled The Lost Mailbag. The folders are arranged alphabetically, and include various proposed story lines for episodes of the show. The series was never actually produced, but the concept was sold and two pilots were aired on ABC in 1973. Both pilots were in the form of television movies, with the first titled, The Letters, and the second titled, Letters from Three Loves.
