Scope and Contents
Dr. Leonard Osborne, fleet surgeon in the US Navy during the War of 1812, kept this journal from 1809 to 1815. In it, he describes medical lectures he attended, some medical treatments, and his experiences during the war, including the various locations his ship visited and his fellow seamen. He also included some sketches, hand-drawn maps, and poems. The notification of Dr. Osborne's death from the Secretary of the Navy, dated October 20, 1837, is pasted inside the journal's front cover.
