Scope and Contents
The Wilfred Cantwell Smith Papers consists of correspondence, off prints of journal articles, lecture notes, typescripts of papers presented at conferences, and pamphlets sent to him by former students and colleagues. Much of the material is on Islam, but also includes comparative religion, philosophy and one file on the Cantwell family. There is occasional correspondence with leading academic figures such as Marshall Hodgson. The original alphabetical arrangement followed by Professor Smith has been retained.

Biographical Information:
Professor Wilfred Cantwell Smith was a Canadian scholar on Islam and comparative religion. He founded the Institute for Islamic Studies at McGill University in Montreal in 1951, helped establish the Center for the Study of World Religions at Harvard, and the Department of Comparative Religion at Dalhousie University. His The Meaning and End of Religion (1963) was a groundbreaking study of the historical changes in the meaning of such words as religion, faith, and belief.
