Scope and Contents

The John T. Stamelos Collection includes souvenir items and clothing related to Stamelos' tour of duty as a U.S. Marine in Tientsin, Tsingtao, and Peitaiho Beach, China. Photographs document the 1st Marine barracks, individual Marines, and Tientsin street scenes including Victoria Cafe, Astor House, and International Bridge. There is also a series of photographs of the Japanese surrender in Tientsin on October 15, 1945, and ephemera related to the First Marines Club in Tientsin.

Abstract

The John T. Stamelos Collection contains photographs, ephemera, and clothing acquired by Stamelos while serving as a U.S. Marine in China circa 1945-1946, including a jacket and clutch purchased for his then girlfriend and future wife. The bulk of the collection is comprised of souvenir clothing and accessories.
