West Van Nuys Chamber of Commerce Collection

 Collection
Identifier: URB-WVNCC

Scope and Contents

The West Van Nuys Chamber of Commerce Collection documents the administrative functions, activities, and goals of the West Van Nuys Chamber of Commerce (WVNCC) through correspondence, minutes and agendas, reports, newsletters, newspaper clippings, and pamphlets. The Chamber supported the expansion of Van Nuys Airport, improvement of local high schools, the development of recreational facilities in the Sepulveda Dam Basin and the promotion of local businesses. The bulk of the collection dates from the early 1950s and 1960s; material dating from the 1970s is very limited. The collection is arranged in two series: Administrative Records (1954-1976) and Subject Files (1953-1977).

Series I, Administrative Records, contains agendas and minutes, by-laws, correspondence, membership lists, reports, and related administrative records of the Chamber. Also included are by-laws and membership lists of the West Valley Associated Chambers of Commerce. The files are arranged in alphabetical order.

Series II, Subject Files, includes brochures, correspondence, handouts, newspaper clippings, newsletters, reports, statistical data, and related items that document the various interest areas of WVNCC. The files are arranged in alphabetical order by subject.

Historical Note:

The West Van Nuys Chamber of Commerce (WVNCC) was established in 1952 by a group of local merchants. The Chamber was a member of the West Valley Associated Chambers of Commerce and the Valley-Wide Streets, Highways and Transportation Committee. Through voluntary associations, local businessmen and property owners helped direct the growth and development of the San Fernando Valley.

Because WVNCC long championed the cause of the Van Nuys Airport, the most active private-plane airport in California, the association is often referred to as "The Airport Chamber." Other important issues backed by the Chamber include defense contracts coming to the San Fernando Valley, the development of transportation networks, education, housing and population growth, recreational facilities and public works.
