Captain Leonard H. Williams Chinese Maritime Customs Collection
Scope and Contents
The Captain Leonard H. Williams Chinese Maritime Customs Collection contains official documents from the Chinese Maritime Customs Service including Williams' memo of service, identification papers, and correspondence. Also included are photographs which document aspects of Williams' time with the Chinese Maritime Customs Service; some photographs include inscriptions with dates. The collection contains Williams' diary dated 1930, an unofficial handwritten register of WWII-era sea vessels, and a farewell certificate awarded to Williams in 1977 by the Honourable Society of Far East Beachcombers. Also included is a selection of research materials used by Williams' son, Mark L. Isaac-Williams, while writing the 2004 publication, From Dragon to Dragon, such as: two newspaper clippings, images of various customs flags, and a photocopied image of the Customs House in Shanghai. From Dragon to Dragon highlights Captain Williams' life in the Chinese Maritime Customs Service and is available through the library catalog. The collection is arranged alphabetically by subject.
