Whitfield T. Ganong World War I Diaries
Scope and Contents
The collection consists of two diaries with entries written by Canadian Private Whitfield T. Ganong from 1918-1919. In the diaries, Ganong briefly documents the daily experiences of the 26th Canadian Infantry Battalion in Europe during World War I. The diaries are also "Soldier's Own" diaries, which include large sections devoted to tips and information that could be used by soldiers in the field such as basic first aid instructions, useful phrases translated into French and military definitions among others. The collection also includes Ganong’s pay book, which states his rate of pay as a Canadian soldier as well as all advances taken by Ganong while on active service.

Biographical Information:
Whitfield T. Ganong was born on August 1st, 1895 in New Brunswick, Canada. He joined the Canadian Over-Seas Expeditionary Forces in 1915, and was sent to France with the 26th Canadian Infantry Battalion in 1918. He served overseas until March of 1919, when he was discharged. He passed away in Vancouver, British Columbia in 1989.
