Jorge P. Forjaz Collection

 Collection
Identifier: OCH-JPF

Scope and Contents

The Jorge P. Forjaz Collection consists largely of records compiled by Forjaz to be used in his exhaustive genealogy of the Macanese, Familias Macaenses. Records include correspondence between Forjaz and numerous contributors who provided family histories, legal documents, photographs, memorabilia, the author’s typescript and manuscript, both with handwritten notes, extensive research records, and notes and photographs compiled by the author. The family histories and particularly the photographs often illustrate life in Shanghai and other regions in China where many of the families lived. The collection is arranged in three series: Correspondence and Familial Information (1805-1996), Manuscript and Typescript (1995-1996), and Research Records and Notes (1704-1996).

Series I, Correspondence and Familial Information includes correspondence between Forjaz and those who provided familial information for his research. The records include correspondence, legal documents (copies and originals), photographs, and memorabillia. The materials in this series retain the original alphabetic arrangement by family name, established by Forjaz.

Series II, Manuscript and Typescript contains several draft versions of Forjaz's Familia Macaenses. The series is divided into two subseries, Subseries A, Manuscripts, and Subseries B, Typescripts. All drafts contain handwritten editing notes by Forjaz. The materials in this series retain the original alphabetic arrangement by family name, established by the creator. Bound draft volumes are arranged alphabetically.

Series III, Research Records and Notes includes correspondence, identification notes by Forjaz, legal records such as baptismal registries and genealogical indexes, photographs, and maps. The documents are arranged topically.
