Black Power Oral History Project Collection

 Collection
Identifier: TBC-BPOH

Scope and Contents

The Black Power Oral History Project Collection consists of oral histories documenting the experiences of Black Power activists in Los Angeles.

This collection offers invaluable first-hand accounts and perspectives about an important historical era. However, some of these materials may pose ethical and emotional challenges. The content may reflect attitudes, language, and norms that may not align with current standards. Viewers may encounter harmful representations, offensive terminology, and descriptions of traumatic events.

It is critical to approach these complex narratives with thoughtfulness and empathy. The interviewees have lived through times of systemic oppression and community tension. Their words capture the realities of marginalization as well as pride in identity and culture. While certain expressions may be difficult to understand or appreciate, they carry significance within the communities represented. Handled with care, these unfiltered accounts offer clarity and humanize experiences that must not be forgotten.

Interviews were conducted by Dr. Keith Rice and Dr. Karin Stanford from 2015 to 2020, and transcribed by students in 2020 and 2021.

The collection is arranged by interviewee’s last name in alphabetical order at the folder level.
