Scope and Contents

The Arpad Richard Hertzka Collection consists mainly of loose photographs with accompanying negatives taken or collected by Hertzka of scenery, streets, buildings, and people in China and other Asian countries, including a series of photographs capturing the executions of two men by local soldiers.

Also included in the collection are a number of postcards depicting people and various notable buildilngs in China, an album of professional photography with accompanying information about Hong Kong, and an album with photographs and information about scenes and places throughout China.

Biographical Information:

Arpad Richard Hertzka lived in Bangkok, Thailand, from the early 1900s through the end of World War I. He had been placed in an enemy alien camp during the war as he was an Austrian citizen, and was subsequently repatriated to his birthplace of Czechoslovakia.

He moved to Shanghai in the early 1920s, and remained there until fleeing the country in 1949. He was in the paper importing business as A.R. Hertzka, both in Thailand and Shanghai.

Abstract

Arpad Richard (A.R.) Hertzka was a businessman involved in paper importing, first in Thailand from the early 1900s to the late 1910s, then in Shanghai from the early 1920s to 1949. The collection consists of loose photographs, photography books, and postcards collected by Hertzka depicting the scenery and people of Asia during the early 20th century.
