Ruben Macias Collection
Scope and Contents
The Ruben Macias Collection contains photographs, publications, clippings, and ephemera that document Macias' time as a student, and his career as an educator within Southern California's Deaf community. Materials in the collection primarily document education for Deaf people and Deaf life in Southern California, though there are a small amount of materials related to the international Deaf community.
Ephemera include materials from summer camps, school memorabilia, and posters for Valley Silent Club events. Clippings center on educational issues for the Deaf community, including interpretations of least restrictive environment (LRE) in the 1980s, early childhood education, baby sign language, sports, and art in education.
School publications are primarily from Gallaudet College, the California School for the Deaf in Riverside (CSDR), and California State University, Northridge. There are a number of materials related to Macias' role as founding member of Kappa Sigma Psi, a Fraternity centered on creating community for Deaf CSUN students. Macias remained engaged with CSDR, Gallaudet, and CSUN after graduation, and the collection also includes alumni and reunion materials.
As an educator Macias attended conferences and other events centering on education for the Deaf community. Photographs and clippings document his work at the Abram Friedman Occupational Center.
