The materials document Vandenbeer's service in Herzogenaurach, Germany in 1966 and Danang, Vietnam from 1966 to 1967. There are also some photographs of Vandenbree in the United States in his Army uniform between 1975 and 1980.

The photographs document U.S. Army living quarters, uniforms, and equipment during the Vietnam War. They also document soldiers’ way of life and what they did during their downtime. A small amount of photographs depict Vandenbree on vacation in Oahu, Hawaii. There are also photographs with actor Robert Stack and boxer Floyd Patterson.

The correspondence consists of letters and greeting cards written to Roy from his parents, relatives, and friends. The letters date from 1967 to 1968. There are a few undated cards which were likely created between 1966 and 1968. Topics discussed include family updates, Vandenbeer's girlfriend Irene, hometown news, holidays, and well wishes.
