Thomas W. McCullough Vietnam War Correspondence Collection
Scope and Contents
This collection of letters is from Thomas W. McCullough to his parents who live in Wichita, Kansas. The letters begin in December 1968 while he was awaiting assignment, and end in July 1969 after he was wounded in the field. Topics covered in the letters include daily life during service, the killing of members of the Viet Cong, the killing and wounding of U.S. soldiers, accidental killings of Vietnamese civilians, a girlfriend or fiancé by the name of Sherry Cole, the muddy and rainy conditions of Vietnam, encountering enemy booby traps in the field, and his eventual wounding and recovery process. The collection also includes a customs declaration, two telegrams updating the McCulloughs on their son’s medical condition, and a few news clippings.

Biographical / Historical
Thomas W. McCullough was in the 69th Division of the U.S. National Guard and was called to duty in May 1968. McCullough was a Specialist Class 4 in the U.S. Army. He was stationed in Vietnam from January 1969 until about May 1969, when he was wounded in combat. He grew up in Wichita, Kansas. While stationed in Vietnam, McCullough worked in an office, and also served as a medic in the field. McCullough was awarded a Combat Medical Badge in 1969 and later awarded a Purple Heart.
