 Collection
Identifier: OCH-HGC

Scope and Contents

The Harry Glathe Collection contains photographs, ephemera, clippings, and correspondence between Harry Glathe and John S. Service. The photographs are captioned, and many are labeled with names. They include a candid photo of Yunnan province governor Long Yun, receptions at the United States and French Consulates, Tsung Tung Hseuh, unidentified people working as miners and carrying coal, and Peggy Darrow and Celia Talbot's birthday parties. There are also a number of group photographs of people at picnics, parties, and riding horses. Along with the photographs is a list of foreigners living in Kunming in 1934. Correspondence with John S. Service includes newspaper and magazine clippings and a speech. These materials discuss Service's career in the Foreign Service, including Senator Joseph McCarty's targeting of him during the 1950s Red Scare and Communist witch hunts.
