Marine Insurance Policy Collection
Scope and Contents
This collection includes three marine insurance policies from the late 18th century covering cargo ships. The policies document the vessel's owner, starting port, destination, master, and cargo. The collection is arranged alphabetically by ship name. Schooner Ariel was owned by Ashbel Wright and traveling from the West Indies to New York or New London. Sloop Friendship with ship master Benjamin Harris was owned by Bartholomew Rand and traveling from Boston to the West Indies and back. Friendship was potentially carrying perishable goods such as bread, corn, hides and skins. Sloop Friendship was condemned at Bermuda. Schooner Lady Washington with ship master Eben Wheelwright was owned by Captain William Coombs and was traveling from Port-de-Paix to Newbury-Port or Boston.
