Diocese of Seo de Urgel Spain Register of Daily Expenditures
Scope and Contents
Daily purchases of food, wax, lamp oil, salt, and all other supplies needed by the Dominican convent. The amounts spent are totalled at the bottom of each page and periodically they were summarized, audited or inspected, and countersigned by various supervising fathers. Entries are in Latin or Catalan; days are named using the ecclesiastical system, "feria ii" through "feria vi" for Monday through Friday, with Saturday and Sunday in the ordinary form; accounts are kept in old Carolingian units, precise equivalents of English currency. The end of the codex has been reversed and used for recording receipts, usually from the daily collection plate. The codex begins: "Fferia iii. que computator prima februarii ann dm̃ Millesimo quingentesimo terciodecimo [1 Feb 1513] -- Incipit exponere veñabilis pater anthonius planella factus nonq procurator in Conviẽtu Sedis Urg̃lli. [Convent of the See of Urgel]." In original vellum wrapper. Urgel is a Catalan bishopric of great antiquity. Of considerable interest both for Spanish monastic history and economic history.
