Lewis Alman Hohstadt O.K. Corral Manuscript
Scope and Contents
The document is 4-pages, handwritten in pencil on lined paper, by Lewis Alman Hohstadt, describing his arrival in Arizona with his family in 1875, and his recollections of events surrounding the gunfight at the O.K. Corral in 1881. He describes his ride, at the request of the Charleston, Arizona telegraph operator, to bring news of Billy Clanton's death to the Clanton family at their ranch, and later events involving John Slaughter, sheriff of Cochise County. Hohstadt was acquainted with the Clantons but not Wyatt Earp and his brothers. He was about 17 years old in 1881, and about 46 when he wrote his recollections. The document is titled, "What Mr. L.A. Hohstadt, a resident of Cochise County since 1875, has to say." It is signed, "Sincerely Yours, L.A. Hohstadt."
