Scrimshaw and Ivory Collection

 Collection — Box: 1
Identifier: SC-IVC

Scope and Contents

The Scrimshaw and Ivory Collection contains two scrimshaw that are likely engraved whale teeth and two small figurine pieces. The first scrimshaw is undated and engraved with the image of a large sailing ship at sea on one side. On the other side is a large ship, smaller boats, and possibly dolphins in a harbor, with palm trees on shore. The second scrimshaw is dated 1840. It depicts the ship Albatross and includes the initials J.H.A. on one side. The other side features a reclining nude woman with the notation "My love Jayne." The woman stands next to an anchor and is holding an American flag. The two small figurines are undated, and possibly Chinese.
