British Vanity Fair Caricature Collection

 Collection
Identifier: SC-VFC

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of over 700 caricature prints from Vanity Fair (London, England : 1868). Many of the prints are accompanied by a brief biography of the figure depicted. The portraits were satirical and celebratory in nature and depict public figures holding a range of professions such as doctors, scientists, jockeys, judges, sports figures, royalty, politicians, writers, clergy, and actors. Two of the main artists that created the images were Sir Leslie Ward (aka "Spy") and Carlo Pellegrini (aka "Ape"). Other artists include Max Beerbohm, James Jacques Tissot, Harry Furniss, Frank Paton, Walter Sickert and Alfred Thompson. The prints are on paper ranging in size from 9 inches by 13 1/2 inches to 10 5/8 inches by 15 1/2 inches. A large portion of the paper has marbled or gold edges which might indicate that the pages were bound together at one point. It is unclear if these prints are reproductions or original chromolithographs. The collection also includes a catalog from Lyons Ltd. Antique Prints which acts as index to the prints. The collection is organized chronologically.
