Shayla and Rebecca Thomas, two queer women, married on June 12, 2004. Their wedding program documents the main events of the ceremony and identifies who was in their wedding party. The time of their wedding coincided with the start of the formal recognition of and legal battles surrounding same-sex marriage in California. In February and March 2004, San Francisco began licensing same-sex marriages but was quickly overruled in August by the California Supreme Court. In 2008, the State of California licensed same-sex marriages from June to November, but was halted by voter-approved Proposition 8. In June 2013, the State of California legalized same-sex marriage, and in 2015, the United States followed suit in Obergefell v. Hodges.
