Abstract

Charles McHaney was a U.S. Marine stationed in Tientsin, China during and after World War II. While in Tientsin, he took numerous photographs, the subjects of which are primarily his fellow Marines, local geography, and local culture. The collection consists mostly of these photographs, with some additional print materials related to the U.S. Marine presence in Tientsin in the late 1940s.

The collection consists of newsletters produced by migrant workers in labor camps established by the Resettlement Administration and the Farm Security Administration in California and Washington during the 1930s and early 1940s. These newsletters document everyday operations of the camps, and provide insight into the lives of the thousands of workers who migrated to the West Coast in the wake of the Dust Bowl seeking employment.
