Thomas O'Loughlin World War I Collection

Abstract Thomas O'Loughlin served in the US Navy during World War I as a member of the crew on the hospital ship USS Mercy. He left for France in May 1918 and with his shipmates provided medical and other support for Allied forces fighting in Europe and the US over the next several months. While serving on the USS Mercy Thomas wrote letters to his mother and other family members at home in Connecticut. Thomas writes most frequently about his desire to be discharged from the Navy. Dr. Leonard Osborne Journal

Abstract

Dr. Leonard Osborne, fleet surgeon in the US Navy during the War of 1812, kept this journal from 1809 to 1815. In it, he describes medical lectures he attended, some medical treatments, and his experiences during the war, including the various locations his ship visited and his fellow seamen. He also included some sketches, hand-drawn maps, and poems. The notification of Dr. Osborne's death from the Secretary of the Navy, dated October 20, 1837, is pasted inside the journal's front cover.
